Large 19th Century scene from Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, oil on canvas by James Elder Christie. Excellent quality and good condition scene from the novel as the shipwrecked Crusoe journeys through the wilderness of the tropic jungles in a rare early scene on the famous novel. Signed and dated 1886. Presented in a good gilt frame.

James Elder Christie studied in Paisley, near Glasgow, and in South Kensington, London. From 1876, his name appears frequently in the exhibition catalogues of the Royal Academy, Suffolk Street, the Grafton Gallery and the New Gallery in London. He won two gold medals at the Royal Academy in 1876 and 1877. He spent some time in Paris, where he took part in the 1900 Exposition Universelle and the Paris Salon of 1905(honourable mention). He was a member of the New English Art Club.
