Artist Biography: Gilbert Stuart Newton

British, 19th century, male.

Born 20 September 1794, in Halifax (Nova Scotia), Canada; died 5 April 1835, in Chelsea.

Painter. History painting, genre scenes.

Gilbert Stuart Newton began his art studies in Boston with his maternal uncle, GilbertStuart. He visited Italy and Paris, and then went to London to become a pupil at the Royal Academy. Initially he adopted the style of Watteau, whom he admired immensely. He exhibited in London, mainly at the Royal Academy and the British Institution, from 1818 to 1833, when a brain disorder interrupted what promised to be a brilliant career. He became an associate of the Royal Academy in 1828 and a member in 1832. His works are notable for the quality of their colour and draughtsmanship.
