Large 19th Century French scene of 17th Century gentlemen playing cards in a tavern, oil on canvas by Edgar Farasyn. Excellent quality and condition large scale genre scene of the two gentlemen in plumed hats as one holds three aces and the other player has with his card being read by the spectator next to him. Signed and dated. Presented in a good antique gilt frame.

Artist Biography


Edgard Farasyn was a student at the academy of fine arts in Antwerp, at which he then became a professor. He was one of the founder-members of the The Thirteen ( De XIII) group and a member of the Wees Uzelf group. He also exhibited in Paris and won a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1889. He painted very varied subjects, with a predilection for the typical scenes of the daily lives of peasants and fishermen. He executed some mural decorations at the town hall in Antwerp.
