Large 19th century twilight landscape over Essex, oil on board by Sir George Clausen. Extensive view overlooking the hills of Essex at the close of the day as the last of the days light fades from the falling sun on the horizon. Good quality and condition. Restoration notes show the board has been supported by an exterior panel. Artists plaque verso.

Artists Biography
George Clausen is believed to have come from a Danish family, but he studied painting in England and lived in Widdington in Essex from 1891 to 1905. He exhibited from 1874 at the Society of Painters in Watercolours in London and was a member of the Royal Academy. Several of his paintings reveal the undeniable influence of Millet. Clausen's technique is similar to Impressionism and he skilfully renders the effect of light in the countryside and on people's clothes.
