Artist Biography
Thomas Sidney Cooper was first a scenery painter before going to London in 1823. Once there, he worked at the British Museum and the Royal Academy, although he did not start sending his works for exhibition until about 1833. He lived in his birthplace, Canterbury, for a period and was able to sell some of his work. He was married in Brussels where he spent four years between 1827 and 1831. Back in London, he began regularly to send his works for exhibition not only to the Royal Academy but also to the British Institution, the Society of British Artists in Suffolk Street and the New Water-Colour Society. In 1882, in Canterbury, he founded the Sidney Cooper Art Gallery. He became a member of the Royal Academy in 1867.
