Large 15th Century Ferrara School portrait of a husband and wife worshipping outside a small hillside town, oil/tempera on panel. The couple are before a devotional statue (cut from the composition) where they have stopped for prayer. There is a strange contrast between the husband who is pleased and pious and his the wife, forlorn and in deep reflection. It symbolises, perhaps, an unhappy marriage. The panel and painted surface are in exceptional condition for their age. Slight bowing to the panel but no notable splits and the painted surface very stable. Presented in an ebonised frame.
