Large 19th Century classical scene of Venus and Vulcan in the forge, oil on canvas by Herbert Arnould Olivier. Excellent quality and condition example of the artists work on a huge scale probably as an exhibition entry at the Paris Salon or Royal Academy. Presented in a good gilt frame.

Artist Biography


Born 9 September 1861, in Battle (Sussex); died 2 March 1952, on Hayling Island (Hampshire).

Herbert Arnould Olivier studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1881 and participated in Royal Academy exhibitions from 1883. He also exhibited at the Paris Salon. At the end of World War I he served as unofficial artist at the Peace Conference of Versailles. During World War II he made independent submissions to the War Artists Advisory Committee.
