Auguste Louis Lepre, son of the sculptor Franois Lepre, was a pupil of the English engraver Burn Smeeton. An unquestionably talented burin engraver, he nevertheless made his name as one of the few modern artists to use woodcut. He engraved mainly scenes of Paris and its suburbs. He reproduced the drawings of Daniel Verge and Edmond Morin for the Monde illustr. Among his works are two series of original woodcuts: The Forest of Fontainebleau and The Great Towns of France. He also illustrated works by Maupassant, Jean Richepin and Huysmans.
He first exhibited with a painting at the Salon de Paris in 1870, but from 1876 he devoted himself almost exclusively to engraving. He was awarded a 3rd-class medal in 1881, a 2nd-class in 1887, and a gold medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle. He was one of the first members of the Socit Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1890, and in 1900was appointed a jury member. He was decorated with Lgion d'Honneur and became an Officier in 1911.
