Victor Charreton Alix Marquet
, Buste de Victor Charreton
Fine early 20th Century French Pointillist view of a hillside commune, oil on canvas by Victor Charreton. Excellent quality and condition example of the artists work typical of his pointillist period following the influence of the first impressionist movement. Signed, unframed.
Victor Charreton was a French painter who carried on the legacy of the Impressionists with his depictions of the countryside. Combining varied passages of thick and thin paint, Charreton captured the transparency of light in varied weather. Born on March 2, 1864 in Bourgoin-Jallieu, France, he studied law in Paris and worked as a practicing lawyer for many years before dedicating himself entirely to painting in 1902. In the decades that followed, Charreton traveled frequently throughout France and North Africa, during which time he produced a number of atmospheric winter scenes. He notably served as a professor at the Académie Julian in Paris from 1919 until 1925. The artist died on November 26, 1936 in Clermont-Ferrand, France. Today, Charreton’s works are held in the collections of the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Brooklyn Museum, among others.
