Antique Tudor Portrait Of 16th Century Elizabethan Clergyman Holding A Bible
Large antique portrait of a circa 16th gentleman from the court of Queen Elizabeth I, oil on canvas. Excellent quality portrait at half length of the senior clergyman in black and an elaborate white ruff holding a pocket bible or psalm book. The attire is similar to that of the Lord Keeper of The Great Seal as seen in portraits of Sir Nicholas Bacon. The style shows influences of Holbein but painted posthumously. Presented in an ebonised frame. A similar version painted on oak panel is owned by The Dulwich Picture Gallery.
