The Artist

William Linton worked initially in trade and studied the works of Claude Lorraine and Wilson for pleasure. In 1817 he exhibited two paintings at the Royal Academy, then continued to exhibit in London at the British Institution and Society of British Artists, of which he was a founder member. Linton travelled widely in Europe and brought back a great many studies, which he exhibited in 1842. He was an important representative of the school of classical landscape in England.
