Large 19th Century French river landscape, oil on canvas ascribed to Henri Rousseau. Extensive river landscape with a solitary figure fishing as a boat sails in the distance. Circa 1860, signed H Rousseau bottom right. Presented in its original antique gilt frame. Old Christies stencil number verso. Would benefit from a light surface clean and further research. The view may be from the Mayenne River, Laval where Rousseau spent his youth before joining the army and later moving to Paris to developing his distinct Post-Impressionist style. The signature is an identical match.
Rousseau was a self taught primitive painter only developing his famous jungle paintings from 1890 at the age of 45. His inspiration came from the illustrations of children's books, the botanical gardens in Paris and his travels with the French Army to the subtropics of Mexico.
