Artist Biography

Unusually for a portraitist, Paul Falconer Poole was largely self-taught. He exhibited for the first time at the Royal Academy in London in 1830 and continued to show his work there until his death in 1879. He also exhibited at the British Institution and at the Suffolk Street Gallery. Poole was elected to associate membership of the Royal Academy in 1849 and to full membership in 1861. He submitted work to the competition organised to decorate the new Parliament buildings in 1847 and was awarded a prize of 300 pounds. Poole was also awarded a medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1855.
