Large 19th century portrait of a dapple grey racehorse in a stable, oil on canvas by John Frederick Herring. Excellent quality and condition large scale side study of the racehorse with the owners initials to the right upon the horses cover. Presented in its original gilt frame, monogrammed and dated 1874.

Fred, as he was familiarly known, Herring was the son and pupil of John Frederick Herring senior; he married the painter Kate Rolfe, the daughter of A.E. Rolfe, who was also an artist and a friend of J.F. Herring. Fred was the most talented of the three painter brothers and a prolific painter of farm scenes, skilled in both composition and light effects.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1860 to 1875, the British Institution and in Suffolk Street.
