Julius Olsson worked in business for four years before he devoted himself to painting, without any training. He travelled, particularly by sea, collecting numerous studies. In 1890 he settled in St Ives. He began participating in exhibitions in London in 1888; then, from 1892 onward, became a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy. He also took part in the Salon de Paris: in 1900 he received an honourable mention at the Exposition Universelle, and in 1903 was awarded a third-class medal. He was a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Essentially a painter of seascapes, he was most fond of sunsets and moonlight.
